Below are an assortment of saw blade paintings that Nick Abstract produced in his Indianapolis studio during the winter of 2022-2023. These pieces debuted in a solo exhibition at The Harrison Center in April 2023, alongside dozens of other pieces from the Abstract collection. The show was titled 'Protoblade,' showcasing these artworks.
"As an artist who loves to challenge traditional notions, I experiment with unexpected materials that I believe push boundaries and defy expectations. One of the mediums I have used is aerosol paintings on enormous aerial saw blades, which I acquired from rural farmers in southeastern Indiana, specifically Vevay, IN. These saw blades have led full lives, being utilized to cut down trees along power lines. However, this is not the end of their story."
-NICK ABSTRACT
“The largest saw blade I used came from a saw mill, where it milled massive trees. These blades, with their sharp and dangerous nature, intrigued me and inspired me to explore the intersection between seemingly hazardous materials and delicate artwork”
“These paintings are meditations on creating order and harmony with paint onto typically terrifying sharp objects. This contrast of aggression and order invites the viewer to reflect on the complexity of the world we inhabit. The saw blades, once used for cutting down trees, now serve as canvases for self expression, transforming them from objects of destruction to objects of reflection and wonder. It was a unique and fulfilling experience to repurpose these saw blades into works of art, giving them new life and purpose. After the first few pieces I painted, I knew I was birthing something different into existence and it felt new, unique, and fresh. I kept going. Art should say something and spark a conversation. What doesn’t spark a convo like having a massive saw blade painting in your house”
“I previously was known more for my large-scale mural installations. Studio art making has been a relatively new addition to my art practice. During the summer months, my main focus is on ambitious exterior projects, covering walls with my geometric shapes and compositions. However, in the winter months, I scale down and pursue painting on other smaller mediums. This allows me to delve deeper into my artistic process. I reflect on my inspirations and what I aim to convey through my artwork, carefully considering how to communicate my message. While art may not always spell out its meaning, I see it as an experience for the viewer, an opportunity to immerse them in my world and share my perspectives. Through my geometric lens, I hope to invite the viewers to see and feel the world as I do, even if just for a moment, creating a visual journey that transcends the traditional notions of art.”
“Despite being color blind as well, I approach my art as meditations in color theory. Using principles of color relationships and contrast, I create harmonious and visually striking compositions that challenge traditional notions of what it means to be an artist.”
